Gayatri Mantra

AUM BHOOR BHUWAH SWAH,
TAT SAVITUR VARENYAM
BHARGO DEVASYA DHEEMAHI
DHIYO YO NA PRACHODAYAT

This mantra is also called “Surya Gayatri” or “Savitri Mantra” . This mantra is found in Rig Veda (iii, 62, 10) During the period of Rigveda in oral tradition in Gurukulas, there was no religion of any form.The Rishies of Rigveda were searchers for truth. All through the Rigveda poem, the Rishisanticipated a God whom they did not know. The agony and cry of such saints could be found inmany stages of Rigveda.

The mantra became pivotal in daily worships and rituals among Brahmins & Prohits. Especially this mantra is sung in Yajna Poojas and in the morning prayers after holy bath. Before the holy bath, one has to say Prartha Snana Mantra:

“Papokam Papakanmokam Papatma
Papasambhava – Thrahimam Pundarikaksha
Surva pap Hari Hare”

Papasambhava = I am born in sin
Papakanmokam = I an doer of sin
Papatma = I am a sinful self
Papokam = I am a sinner
Pundari Kaksha = the one who is in the bosom of my heart
Thrahimam = I am unable to get rid of the sin
Surva pap = all sins
(Surva pap can be by
Manasa = thinking
Vasa = words
Hastapyam = look
Dehinam = body)
Hari = God
Hare = forgive me

After saying this mantra, the devotee takes one to three dips in water and return to his pooja room to recite the Gayatri mantra - most of the times without knowing the meaning. Traditionally, the mantras are memorized to get virtue, prosperity or deliverance. But, most of the mantras are simple in meaning and difficult to assimilate and comprehend. Hence, to be in the routine ritual and to follow the traditional way of doing the things, we would not be daring to know the meaning or entering into research to know the truth behind the mantras. But, knowing the truth will be a permanent solution for liberation and deliverance. The true meaning of human form is to know the truth and seek for the truth relentlessly. Therefore, we have taken time to bring the original meaning of Gayatri Mantra in simple English for the truth seekers around the World.

The Mantra starts with “Om” which has 16 implicit attributes of God and disseminated word form as “A-U-M” (pronunciation: A – and, U – woo and M – him). A means Creator, U means Savior and M means protector or sustainer as 3 attributes. This means that God the Creator is the Savior and the Protector.

13 other attributes:

Ardh = The substance
Nadh = The voice
Bindh = The seed
Kale = The power
Kaladeeth = The giver of power
Shanthi = The peace
Shantiadeeth = The giver of peace
Unmani(woonmani) = Who resides in us
Manonmani = Who resides in our mind
Puri = Who ascends and descends
Madhyamai = The mediator
Patchyanti = The impartial
Parai = who declares

This means that there is only one God who has all the attributes and created

Bur = Earth (Bhoomi)
Buvah = Universe (puvar lokha)
Swah = Heaven (swarg lokha)

The Gayatri Mantra further states that

Tat = that
Savithur = God
Varenyam = to be praised
Burgo = light
Devasya = radiant
Dimahi = meditate
Diyo = knowledge
Yo = who
Na = Our
Prosodhyat = induces

For poetical reasons, the words are scattered in the mantra. But the meaning is that God (Om) who created the Earth, the Heaven and the Universe is the radiant light and who induces our knowledge has to be praised – let us meditate upon Him. As in the prartha snana mantra, the man who born in sin and doer of sin can’t know or understand God unless God induces his knowledge and make him to know God. That God who induces can shine in his soul as radiant light and the devotee start meditate upon Him provided if he knew the God – the radiant Light. How can a man know the radiant Light when living in a life of darkness & bondage and when telling the mantra for a short while? This bondage can be cancelled neither by weapons, nor by wind, fire or millions of deeds. Only the wonderful sword of knowledge that comes of discrimination, sharpened by the grace of the Lard, can destroy it.”
-- Viveka Ch.147

Unless the grace of God reveals to him, his self is in helpless state to know the radiant light. “This Self is not attained through teaching, nor through intellect or much listening. Whom the Self chooses, by him the Self is attained, as He reveals Himself to His chosen.”
-- Mundaka Up. 3.2.3
-- Katha Up. 1.2.23

The Light is not belong to any religion or country or culture or sect or community as very fact of mantra is universal and longing of Rishis to find the Light and the Truth. In ancient days, it is mystery for the Rishis to know the God – the Para Brahma in Saguna Brahma. But God untied the mystery by revealing Himself to the mankind and answered the longing of the Rishis. Who is that God?

ROFL about the poetical reason that the mantra has words scattered. Where did this guy learn Sanskrit?. This guy looks like an imposter and he has followers, God  save Xianinity and the world from such men.

Im a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. Yet Im of the opinion that Jesus is not the one whom the Hindu mantras point to.  We don't need to probe other scriptures to know about Jesus who is explicitly mentioned in the Bible and Quran. Trying to persuade Hindus that Jesus is mentioned in Hindu scriptures will only raise unnecessary controversies which is avoidable. I think it is an attempt using our own wisdom by this strategy. Unless the Holy Spirit convicts a person of Truth, a man cannot be convinced. Any semblance to Jesus in Hindu scriptures may be just a coincidence. We cannot take them for granted. While the intention of adopting such a strategy is noble, the effect may be adverse.

What so many of us, in fear of being decepted or misled refuse to let our hearts see is that all things if traced back are connected to eachother and developed from a same basic point. I believe that point was God the father, Ohm, The Creator of mankind, who did out of love send his only begotten son to redeem the world- seeing that we had become so lost and tangled into our own rituals, and lies and confusions, sins and heathen traditions, we were far from him. He sent the Good Shepard to find his lost sheep, forgive their sins and bring them unto him. "He" is the Him that the vedic texts refer to..as is Christ- wherein they do prophesy that one will come , becoming human or man -a sacrifice for the sins which  we could not remove from ourselves because we were born in sin and are sinful souls , and by him the sins will be removed etc.. etc.. Now the bible also shares the same prophesy and i do not think it is coincidence- why? because God is too great, not one molecule passes into or out of existence without his divine intent. He has also told us that ignorance is evil, as is deception- therefore it is our responsability to find , expose and preserve truth where the devil has hidden it. Any elementary school child could make this connection and clearly see it for truth, and clearly see how something very old very simple and very connected to God, can through centuries be adapted to fit different interests attaching ritualistic tradition, folklore, and following, until it has ultimately evolved into a religion of its own. One case in point is the story of adam and eve. Nearly every religion and culture and country on earth has an evolved story of it, why? Because when it happened it was always known afterward no matter where our ancestors migrated to and no matter the fact that one people became very many cultures and civilizations. This is how the Vedas evolved into theyre place in Hinduism today. As mentioned by  Sadhu Chellappa  in the extremely ancient time that the rishis began to chant the vedas- there was no religion..these rishis out of longing for the One who created them, the universe, humankind, and all things, began to chant, i believe that they were searching for truth because their hearts were troubled not knowing God. If u are a Christian this should resonate with you..somewhere in your heart u can understand that. However diluted, or evolved and added upon it may have become till present day(into an actual religion) has no bearing on the point that is being illustrated about its begining..the intent of its origin! Sadhu Chellappa explains how hinduism originated from christianity.

The archeological evidences clearly tells that the origin of mankind is mesopotamian (Sumer) civilization. Some people came to Indus Vally from Sumer, and all the Indians came from Indus vally. History being this, Mesoporamian->Indus Vally->India,
1. How come Indians have gods other than Mesopotamian gods?
2. And all the history of indian gods are in india only?
3. Is the origin of humankind in India as per Hindus? Then all the archeological Evidences about the oldest civilization(Sumer) is utter bluff?
4. Some hindus believe in reincarnation, some hindus don't. which is the truth?
if your soul know what is sin and what is not then it must know about earlier lives of the soul

finally i am trying to take the Gospel to All, tell me your views samrjy@gmail.com

The civilisation of Sumer degenerated into idolatry and worshipped Marduk.  Since Eden this was the first time that a fully fledged systematic form of Idolatry surfaced after early hidden roots.  The excavated Ziggurat at Ur bears witness to this fact.  It became know as the Babilonian religion.  After God's intervention (Gen 11) by confusing the languages people scattered all over the earth.  Primarily the dispertion went East and West.  The western form of original Babylonian idolatry mutated as Greek, Roman, Germanic, Nordic, Celtic etc mythology.  The eastern branch ended up amongst other eastern mystic religions, as  Hinduism (Actually sanatana dharma).  In the west Marduk (Ba'al) became known as Zeus, Wodan, Thor, etc and in the East as Vishnu, Tee Kong etc.  The female goddess, Ashera (Astarte) became Venus, Athena etc in the West and Kwan Yim, Kali (Shakti), etc in the East.  They were exactly the same gods, but because the languages changed they now received new names and found different cultural expressions.  Hope this helps to clear up how the Sumer religion spread to the rest of the world.  Although this is an oversimplification of the issue, space prevents me from delivering a major treatise on this platform
